Spontaneous Day Together in Madrid

Some of our most unforgettable travel moments have come from letting go of the plan entirely—like dropping a pin on a random spot in Madrid, hopping in an Uber, and spending the day exploring wherever curiosity led us. Whether abroad or close to home, those no-itinerary adventures remind us that spontaneity can be one of the most powerful ways for couples to reconnect and create lasting memories together.
Our Uber dropped us off at Plaza de Dos de Mayo, home to the Monument to Daoiz and Velarde. From there, we spent the day wandering the neighborhood, discovering a cozy bakery serving delicious gluten-free carrot cake and an authentic, melt-in-your-mouth tortilla de patatas. Both spots were buzzing with locals—a sure sign we’d found something special.
After a full day of sightseeing, shopping, and eating, we stumbled upon a gem of a mixology cocktail bar that offered a romantic, one-of-a-kind experience and exceptional service. We even found a small jewelry shop filled with unique pieces that made the perfect keepsakes from our spontaneous day.
If you’ve never taken a day to explore completely on a whim, give it a try. Sometimes those unplanned adventures become the ones you’ll cherish most—because for that day, you’re writing your own story together.
If you’d like more information about the locations we visited—such as the jewelry store, bakery, cocktail bar, or café—feel free to contact us. We’d be happy to share more details!
Tenerife
Tenerife, Spain — Two Weeks, Four Stays, Endless Memories
Visited October 2025
A two-week couples’ adventure across Tenerife — from the beaches of Costa Adeje to the mountain trails of Santiago del Teide and the coastal charm of Puerto de la Cruz. This Tenerife travel guide shares our favorite experiences, hotels, and hidden gems from our unforgettable trip to Spain’s Canary Islands.
We spent two incredible weeks exploring Tenerife, staying in four different accommodations across four unique locations. Each area had its own charm — from lively coastal towns to quiet mountain villages — and together they gave us a wonderful glimpse into the island’s natural beauty and culture.
A Special Trip with Friends
A highlight of our trip was spending part of it with our wonderful friends, Jessica and Kevin. Thank you both for all the amazing memories! One of our favorite shared experiences was a Tenerife wine tour with First Wine Tour. Our guide made the day so special — taking us to off-the-beaten-path towns, scenic lookouts, and local spots while sharing fascinating stories about Tenerife’s history and culture.
If you have the chance, we highly recommend booking a smaller, more personalized tour. It’s such a great way to connect with the island on a deeper level.
A Charming Stopover in the City
When we first arrived, it was late at night, so we stayed just one night at Hotel Emblemático Hi Suites, a charming little place in the city — perfect for a short stay after a long travel day.
Costa Adeje — Relaxation Meets Energy
The first part of our trip was spent in Costa Adeje, at the Gran Tacande with our friends. It’s one of the more popular resort areas in Tenerife, but we loved exploring beyond the hotel.
The coastal path from the resort offered two very different vibes depending on which direction you walked. One way led to the lively Playa Fañabé Shopping Centre — bustling and full of energy — while the other led toward La Caleta, where the atmosphere was calm and laid-back. We definitely preferred the latter, as we tend to enjoy quieter, more local spots.
We also joined a Mount Teide sunset and stargazing tour, one of the most romantic things to do in Tenerife. While it was a larger group, we both agreed it might have been even better as a smaller tour. Still, watching the sunset above the clouds and stargazing under the clear night sky was absolutely magical — just remember to bundle up, as it gets quite chilly after dark!
Santiago del Teide — Cozy Mountain Charm
Next, we stayed at La Casona Del Patio in Santiago del Teide, a small and charming mountain town surrounded by volcanic landscapes. Our room had a lovely patio with views of the surrounding hills, and we could easily walk to nearby restaurants or dine at the hotel’s own restaurant.
One of the best parts of staying here was being able to hike directly from the hotel into the lava fields — a peaceful and unforgettable experience for nature lovers.
Puerto de la Cruz — Ocean Views and Hidden Gems
Our final stop was Atlantic Mirage Suites & Spa in Puerto de la Cruz, and the drive there was full of surprises — including one of our favorite hidden gems in Tenerife: Charco del Viento.
This natural pool is absolutely stunning, but a word of advice — bring water shoes! The rocks are sharp and the waves can be strong. Luckily, there was a small stand at the top where a friendly couple sold water shoes and snacks — I was able to purchase a pair before heading down.
A few tips:
Don’t go during bad weather.
Drive carefully on the narrow road and look ahead for pull-offs where cars can pass.
There’s a small parking lot at the end of the road.
On a calm day, it’s an incredible spot to swim and explore.
Our room at Atlantic Mirage had a beautiful ocean-view balcony, and the rooftop area — complete with hot tubs overlooking the sea — was the perfect place to unwind. We also tried the spa’s water circuit, which was quiet and relaxing.
Puerto de la Cruz itself is a great town to explore on foot, with plenty of restaurants and things to do. We especially loved Restaurante Pizzeria LunaCaprese — so much that we went back more than once! The staff was wonderful, and the food was delicious.
Don’t miss the botanical garden and the street art in the old town area, both perfect for a relaxed afternoon walk.
Menorca
Celebrating 25 Years in Menorca: From the Sea to the Countryside
We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary on the beautiful island of Menorca, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable, relaxing, and romantic getaways we’ve ever had. We split our time between two very different types of stays—one by the sea and one in the peaceful countryside—and fell in love with both for entirely different reasons.
Our first stop was Artiem Audax, perfectly located in the stunning area of Cala Galdana. This adults-only hotel is ideal for those who love both adventure and relaxation. From the property, you can access several scenic hiking trails that wind along the coast to some of Menorca’s most beautiful coves. We loved being so close to the sea, waking up to the sound of the waves, and enjoying the generous complimentary breakfast each morning (we often found we only needed a light snack until dinner!).
Cala Galdana also has a great selection of restaurants and a beautiful beach all within walking distance, making Artiem Audax a perfect base for travelers who want easy access to activities while still enjoying a laid-back atmosphere.
For the second half of our trip, we traded the coast for the countryside and checked into Agroturismo Llucasaldent Gran – Adults Only, and it truly felt like stepping into a postcard. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the peaceful setting, the thoughtful details, and the warm hospitality.
The food here was outstanding. The complimentary breakfast was both delicious and serene, and when we dined at their restaurant in the evening, we were treated to one of the best meals we’ve ever had on vacation. Cristina and Germán, the hosts, made us feel so welcome and ensured every part of our stay was special.
The property itself is a dream—complete with miles of private hiking trails, hidden gardens (including a charming turtle garden!), and two stunning infinity pools right outside the rooms. They even produce their own wine and olive oil, adding a unique local touch to the experience.
What made Llucasaldent Gran truly unforgettable, though, was the tranquility it offered. The peaceful atmosphere invited us to slow down, reconnect, and simply enjoy being together. It reminded us how important it is to take time away from the busyness of life to relax, recharge, and savor romantic dinners and quiet moments together.
Menorca gave us everything we hoped for—and more. From seaside hikes and breathtaking coves to peaceful countryside mornings and romantic dinners, it was the perfect way to celebrate 25 years of love and adventure together.
